Robert Ashby Baker, Jr. Obituary (1921 - 2019)

MADISON - Robert Ashby Baker, Jr., 98, died Sunday, April 28, 2019, at his home. The funeral service will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Ellisboro Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Rockingham County Honor Guard and the NC National Guard. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday at the church and all other times at the home. Mr. Baker was born on February 12, 1921 in Rockingham County to the late Robert Ashby Baker, Sr. and Olive Mae Hopper Baker. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. For 33 years, Robert served as the district supervisor of the Rockingham County Soil and Water Conservation Committee. He was a member of Ellisboro Baptist Church and was an original member of the Huntsville Ruritan Club. Mr. Baker was a lifelong farmer who loved his land, his church and his family. In his later years he enjoyed playing golf and working alongside of his family on the farm. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Knight Baker; brothers, James "Pete" Baker, Sammy Baker and Clyde Baker and sisters, Margaret Barbour, Lenora Stotmeister, Lucille Hilton and Ollie Shropshire. Survivors include his daughter, Gloria B. Livingston and husband, Dale of Cherry Hill, NJ; sons, Bobby A. Baker and wife, Pam and Mark S. Baker and wife, Bonnie, all of Madison; grandchildren, Trey Baker and wife, Brittany, Nicholas Baker and wife, Kristen, Lauren Baker, Elizabeth Livingston, Graham Livingston and Dereck Neal and great-grandchildren, Colton Baker, Cannon Baker, Anna Baker and Jackson Neal. Memorial contributions may be made to Ellisboro Baptist Church, Flag Fund, 1604 Ellisboro Road, Madison, NC 27025 and/or Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
